Roads and Public Works
The Public Works department covers an area of approximately 61,900 acres and approximately 200 kilometers in roads. The Public Works department strives to keep the Township's roadways in good repair to ensure the safety of our residents.
The Public Works department is also responsible for:
- Roads construction projects
- Sidewalks
- Trees
- Ongoing road maintenance work
- Grass mowing
- Bridges and culverts
- Snow removal
- Signs
- Storm drain and catch basin maintenance
- Yard waste and leaf depots
The County of Oxford maintains all County Roads that run through the Township.
The Public Works department operates two patrol yards in the Township, one located on Loveys Street in Hickson and the other on William Street South in Tavistock.

Road maintenance emergencies may be reported to 519-537-2323 after regular office hours. Regular office hours are from 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.
Water and sewer emergencies may be reported to Oxford County at 519-539-9800 or toll free to 1-866-7778 after hours.
Hydro and traffic signal emergencies may be reported to Erie Thames Power Corporation at 519-485-1820.

Snow Conditions and Removal
The Township operates snow plows to remove snow from public roadways in the winter. All roads are also patrolled by our Public Works department, who assesses the safety of Township roads.
In the event that the roads are deemed unsafe for travel, they will be closed until the conditions are clear. Tune into your local radio station for road closures due to poor road conditions.
Frequently asked questions
Can I park overnight on Township roads? |
There is no parking on any roadway in Innerkip and Tavistock from November 1st through April 15th from 1:30 am to 6:00 am. If required, this time is used for snow removal operations in these areas. |
Who do I contact about a municipal water or sewage? |
The municipal water and sewage system is operated and maintained by the County of Oxford. For questions or to report any problems, please contact the Water Wastewater Department at the County of Oxford at 519-539-9800. |
What should I do if the streetlight in front of my house is not working? |
Contact the Township Office or Report an issue online. Each streetlight has a number which is on the pole. If you could provide that number and the street when you call that's all we need. The Township will contact the company that repairs streetlights. |
I need to dig, who do I contact services and locate information? |

What are the proper dimensions and location for a mailbox? |
A mailbox should be located with the mail box door directly above the rounding of the road shoulder. The bottom of the box must be 42 inches above the road. These are federal specifications designed by Canada Post. The Township of East Zorra-Tavistock accepts no responsibility for improperly erected mail boxes. |
