Information for Candidates

This is general information for candidates interested in contesting a municipal office. Eligible candidates can run for one of the following offices:

  • Mayor (1 position)
  • Deputy Mayor (1 position)
  • Councillor, Ward 1 (2 positions)
  • Councillor, Ward 2 (1 position)
  • Councillor, Ward 3 (2 positions)
  • Thames Valley District School Board (for the County of Oxford) – 2 Positions  (file with the City of Woodstock)
  • London District Catholic School Board (for the County of Oxford) – 1 Position  (file with the City of Woodstock)
  • Conseil scolaire catholique Providence (for the Counties of Oxford, Perth, and Grey) – 1 Position  (file with the City of Woodstock)
  • Conseil scolaire Viamonde (for the Counties of Oxford, Elgin, Lambton, Haldimand and Norfolk and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent) – 1 Position  (file with the City of Sarnia)
     

Candidate's Package

Each election, Township Staff prepare a package containing valuable information for those individuals who are thinking about running as a candidate in the municipal or school board election.  Below you will find a copy of the information included in the package, including the required forms.  Hard copies of the Candidate's package may be picked up at the Township Office.

Candidate Information Night

A Candidate and Third Party Advertiser Information Night was held at the Oxford County Administration Building, 21 Reeve Street, Woodstock on April 26, 2018 at 6 p.m.  The Ministry presentation from the Information Night is posted here

Candidate Information Presentation - Intelivote

The Township's contracted voting company (Intelivote) provided a presentation to candidates regarding Internet and Telephone voting on August 16, 2018.  A copy of the presentation can be found here.

Nominations are open as of Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at 8:30 a.m. and close on Friday, July 27, 2018 at 2 p.m. To run as a Member of Council for the 2018 Municipal Election, you must file a nomination paper. Please note the following:

  • Until you file a nomination paper, you cannot raise or spend money on your campaign;
  • Mayor and Councillor candidates must provide at least 25 declaration of endorsements from qualified electors along with their nomination papers

In order to run for office in East Zorra-Tavistock Township, an individual must be:

  • A Canadian citizen; and
  • At least 18 years of age; and
  • A resident of the Township of East Zorra-Tavistock, or
  • An owner or tenant of land in the Township of East Zorra-Tavistock, or the spouse of the owner or tenant; and
  • Not legally prohibited from voting; and
  • Not disqualified by any legislation from holding office

The following are not eligible to be elected as a Member of Council, or from holding office as a Member of Council:

  • A judge of any court
  • A member of Provincial Legislature, the Federal House of Commons or Senate who has not resigned from their office by the close of nominations
  • A candidate who failed to file the necessary financial statement in the last municipal election or by-election​​

Nomination forms must be filed in-person as original signatures are required.  To file a nomination, you must provide the following:

  • A completed Nomination Form - Form 1
    • Signed by a Commissioner of Oaths if filed by an Agent
  • At least 25 Declaration of Endorsements (Mayor and Council candidates only) - Form 2
  • Current Acceptable Identification
  • Nomination Filing Fee
    • $200 - Mayor
    • $100 - All other Council Positions
  • Completed Consent to Release Personal Information Form

Any documents that are not complete will not be accepted. You may file a nomination form beginning May 1, 2018 to July 27, 2018 ending at 2 p.m. Nomination Form Available here. Endorsement of Nomination Form Available Here.

NOTE: It is appreciated if interested parties arrange ahead of time with the Clerk as to when they will be coming to file a nomination.  Please contact the Clerk at (519) 462-2697 or wjaques@ezt.ca to arrange an appointment.

If you no longer wish to run for office in the 2018 Municipal Election, you must:

  • File the Withdrawal of Nomination Form in-person
  • Provide identification
  • File a financial statement by the deadline

The last day to file a withdrawal is Friday, July 27, 2018 at 2 p.m.
