The Township of Norwich is seeking applications for the position of a Fire Services

Training Officer. This position will report directly to the Township of Norwich Director of Fire and Protective Services (Fire Chief) and indirectly to the Rural Fire Services of Oxford County (RFSOC) Fire Chiefs. The Fire Services Training Officer will coordinate and deliver all mandatory and non-mandatory volunteer firefighter training programs as directed by the RFSOC Fire Chiefs in accordance with the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management (OFMEM) guidelines and procedures, and National Fire Protection Association Standards (NFPA). The Training Officer will be responsible for the overall development, delivery, budgeting and invoicing, record keeping and safety of firefighters for all RFSOC training programs. The Training Officer will also be responsible for the training of municipal staff to meet annual training requirements to comply with OFMEM policies and guidelines for municipal emergency management programs.

The position is based on a 35-hour work week and requires flexibility for scheduling due to requirement for nighttime and weekend training programs.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-secondary education in adult education (Community College Diploma or equivalent, which may include continuing education) with related technical subject matter expertise and experience
  • Training Officer Certification from the Ontario Fire College or NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor Level II
  • Certified NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level II and NFPA 1021 Fire Officer II, or OFMEM equivalency
  • NFPA 1521 Safety Officer, or OFMEM equivalency
  • NFPA 1035 Public Fire Life Safety Educator level 2
  • Certified in a recognized First Aid First Responder level
  • Completion of Basic Emergency Management course (EM 300 preferred) and exercise design course (EM 225) from OFMEM is preferred
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in Fire Service training
  • Effective communication, organization and interpersonal skills with ability to build partnerships and generate consensus
  • Must possess and maintain a valid “DZ” Driver’s License, and use of a reliable vehicle for Township business
  • Experience in a municipal fire service is preferred

Summer Student - Public Works Department

The Township of East Zorra-Tavistock is accepting applications for One Summer Student position in the Public Works Department.

Responsibilities:

  • Painting, cleaning and maintenance of public works equipment
  • Roadside grass cutting
  • Assisting with various public works maintenance activities
  • Traffic control person
  • Assist road employees with construction work

Requirements:

  • Enrolled in a post secondary education program and returning to school in September
  • A Class G drivers license
  • The ability to apply good safe work practices
  • The ability to work in a construction type environment
  • Experience with small equipment would be an asset

Summer Student – Building Department

The Township of East Zorra-Tavistock is seeking applications for the position of Summer Student – Building Department for a term of approximately 16 weeks. The Township of East Zorra-Tavistock is a predominantly rural municipality in the County of Oxford with a population of approximately 7,100. The preferred candidate will provide assistance and support to the Chief Building Official and various department staff.

**please note the Township of East Zorra – Tavistock & Blandford Blenheim share building department services under a service sharing agreement and as a result the successful applicant will be required to spend equal time in both the Drumbo and Hickson Offices.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assists with Building Department operations
  • Undertakes Plans Review and Building Inspections
  • Review and follow-up on open building permits
  • Customer Service related to Building applications and proposals
  • Other duties as assigned within the building departments areas of responsibilities
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Very good knowledge of construction activities and construction industry
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service and communication skills, as well as proficiency with Microsoft Office and computerized GIS, GPS and CAD applications
  • Valid Class “G” Drivers licence
  • Certification under the Ontario Building Code for Small Building inspections is not required but would be considered a strong asset.

Volunteer Firefighter Recruitment

 
Periodically, the Township of East Zorra-Tavistock Fire and Emergency Services Department actively recruits new Volunteer Firefighters.

Currently, we are taking applications for the Hickson and Innerkip stations.

Listed below is a short summary of qualifications/expectations to be a volunteer firefighter. If you have reviewed the information, enjoy helping people, appreciate continuous learning, and are physically fit, you may be an ideal candidate for a position as a volunteer firefighter.

Volunteer Expectations:

  • A volunteer firefighter performs firefighting duties and participates in community events as required
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • New recruits must be able to attend a recruit training program or provide proof of completion of a training program acceptable to the Township Fire Chief.
  • Successfully complete Volunteer Firefighter Recruit Training
  • Respond to and work in all types of weather under less than ideal conditions
  • Expected to work in a safe manner, in accordance with all applicable Acts, Regulations, Policies
  • Carry a pager and respond to emergencies when available
  • Attend regular scheduled training twice per month
  • Must submit a Township of East Zorra-Tavistock Firefighter application to a District Chief or the Township office
  • Must submit a current police check and driver’s abstract upon successful application
  • Must be willing to obtain a "D - Z" or equívalent driver’s license at your own expense, within 12 months of being hired
  • Must produce a doctors physical examination form signed by your doctor upon being successful
  • Understand that you are on a one year probation period
  • Must obtain permission from employer granting permission to leave to attend fire calls
  • Be conscientious and dependable as well as a Team Player
