A SAFE AND BEAUITIFUL HISTORICAL SITE IN TAVISTOCK, ONCE AGAIN!
Refurbishment of the historical stone gates in Tavistock has now been completed by Gilholm Stoneworks. Robin and his son Kyle took great pride and craftsmanship in restoring these gates to their original beauty each step along the way.
Although fundraising had not yet met its need for $50,000 the committee felt that due to the accelerated deterioration of the gates, we had no choice but to have the work done this year. Many of our local businesses, organizations and individuals have generously contributed to this project. If you have not yet had time to consider supporting this local worthwhile community project, we ask that you might do so now or early in the new year. All donations received before December 31, 2016 will receive an income tax receipt for 2016. We currently have 55% of the goal. Those donating $100 or more will be (with their permission) listed on the Stone Gates page of the EZT web site.
Donations can be picked up by any committee member, left at the Tavistock Gazette or the Township office in Hickson. Cheques should be made payable to the Township of EZT and should be noted ‘stone gates’.

Following a public meeting (Sept. 2015) of citizens concerned about the deterioration of the stone gates at the entrance to Tavistock’s Queen’s Park, a volunteer committee was formed. This committee was challenged with researching what could be done and what the best option going forward would be. It was determined that restoring the gates would be the best option. We have met with professional stone masons to obtain their professional perspective. The committee issued a Request for Proposals and had five contractors respond.
The decision was made to engage Gilholm Stoneworks. The estimated cost will be $50,000. Government grants and other fund raising possibilities have been researched and applied for but these, even if successful, will not cover the total cost.
Work will begin as soon as the contractor’s scheduling permits (at this point mid August is the planned date).
We are now asking the community for their financial help in fulfilling the wish of the community to have these gates restored.
All donations should be made payable to the Township of East Zorra-Tavistock and indicate that it is for the Queen’s Park Gates. Cheques can be mailed to Queen’s Park Gates, Box 371, Tavistock, ON N0B 2R0. Donations may also be forwarded to any committee member listed below. The township office can accommodate donations by debit (e-transfer not available) or online banking payment, using account number 4622697. Charitable tax receipts will be issued from the township for all donations over $20. Donations of $100 or more will be recognized on the EZT web site, with your permission.
Thank you sincerely for your support in assisting in the restoration of this historical piece of our past.
